Fast Women and Faster Cars – Car Collecting Not Just For Men These Days

Pictured is a typical car show–man at the steering wheel, lucky dice hanging from the rear view mirror, and a woman by his side.

When Danicka Patrick became the first woman to win an Indy car race in 2008 at the Indy Japan 300, women’s status in the car world grew one notch. My CPA suddenly could relate to my domain name expenditures, thanks to Patrick, who became the beautiful spokesperson for Godaddy.com.

At car shows you’ll typically see the man with his classic beauty (car) and woman riding in the passenger seat, accompanying her man. He has primed, painted and polished his restored automobile to near perfection. It’s his passion. But what happens when chicks start buying classics, racing exotics, and occasionally winning contests?

The question isn’t too concerting to men, who still see the ranks of women just a drop in the bucket in the car world. Men are well trained–polite enough not to ask the questions–what type of engine does it have, is it the original engine, how fast does it go, are there any modifications? Not quite sure if the woman driving the vehicle has a knowledge of the car’s mechanics, he mostly looks and admires, studying a vehicle of interest and making his own observations.

Women have come a long way when it comes to cars. They buy them and drive them fast, they sometimes win a race, and very rarely they will take on tasks such as becoming a car mechanic or repairing their own classic engines. Not everyone who owns a classic car (men included) knows how to repair it or knows its specifications. That’s OK.

Currently there are around four women for every 3,000 people who work in auto patrols, providing road service and repairs. Interest among women to embark in auto mechanic careers has grown, primarily because of the lack of good paying jobs.

Women car buyers are a demographic that the automobile industry has always paid attention to. The top cars women are buying more than men these days are:

1. Volkswagen Tiguan
2. Volkswagen Beetle
3. Hyundai Tucson
