Mission San Miguel, A California Survivor!

Nearly all of California's 21 missions would not be around for people to visit and see, if not for hard work, lots of donations and determination by locals with a passion to retain the history and California's cultural heritage — Mission San Miguel Arcangel was established over 200 years ago by the Spaniards, and then taken over by the Mexican government before California became a state in 1850.

Several of California's 21 missions have not survived the battle and have disappeared, but Mission San Miguel Arcangel in San Miguel, California (San Luis Obispo County) is a fighter and is going strong, thanks to mission family in the region and people who helped to reinforce the damaged structure after a 6.5 earthquake that struck in 2003.

In 2009 after years of rebuilding and reinforcement, Mission San Miguel reopened much of its facilities so that church-goers could return to their place of worship, and thousands of tourists could visit and appreciate the beauty inside the mission and on the grounds of one of California's most charming missions that still stands today. Be sure to visit this lovely place and take photos if you pass through California's Central Coast on I-101.
