Sea Music Festival Celebrates San Francisco Maritime History

1st Saturday of Every Month Weekly Chantey Sings at San Francisco Maritime Museum Hyde Street Pier take place.

If you’ve never heard a Sea Chantey song, now is your chance to climb on board two historic vessels at the San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Each year in September the nation’s best sea shanty music performers attend this event. Many of the sea shanties are songs created and sung on board ships that sailed the high seas, making their way to California before, during and after the Gold Rush of 1848-49. The tunes are catchy and lyrics tell stories, sometimes chronicles about trips much like a travelogue. Costumes, festivities with performing stages on two ships–the Eureka and the Balclutha–provide a unique experience for all ages. The fun goes all day long Admission: Hyde Street Pier and Visitor Center, free. Boarding fees for the historic vessels: Adults, $5 approx., ages 15 and under, free. Free with National Park passes.
