The Boots, The Glove and The People Behind the Stars

When Lady Gaga steps out on stage wearing nothing but bubbles or a cage, people are mesmerized but seldom amazed. It̵#8217;s expected that she’s going to look outrageously unpredictable. Among the designers who have given her bizarre looks such as matching black plastic gun projectiles from her bra or sword-like wings is famous designer Giorgio Armani, who signed a deal with the Lady for several million dollars in concepts and merchandise. She is by no means the only “shocker” among rockers.

Michael Jackson may be gone but his memory lives on in the Thriller video, his favorite metallic cowboy boots and single glove. Jackson got his inspiration from his long-time costume designers, Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush, two stars behind the scenes helping him shine. Jackson saw Tompkins wearing red & black cowboy boots and asked for his own personal version made of metal. The design team found inspiration in sabatons, the part of a knight’s armor that protected the foot. They also helped Michael develop the single glove. Inspired by entertainers such as Buffalo Bill Cody who decorated his gloves with flashy beads merely for show, Jackson wrote in his autobiography that “wearing two gloves seemed so ordinary, but a single glove was different and definitely a look.”
