This was Chumash Country California and the beach-loving people who made decorative arts from seashells and water-proof boats coated with tar from local sources, traveled between the mountains and the sea, enjoying places such as Point Mugu. It has always been known as a great fishing spot in the land of plenty.

Point Mugu State Park is mostly in the Santa Monica Mountains but the ocean frontage--five miles of beaches, bluffs, and dunes provide the oasis of escape north of Santa Monica and Malibu and south of Oxnard and Ventura. The mountains, themselves, offer the unique characteristic of running east to west, evidenced by mountainous rock formations that drop into the ocean.

The ocean temperatures in this location are weakly influenced by the Alaskan cold water current that keeps the Pacific Ocean temperature seldom rising above 62 degrees in the summer. The summer days can be warm (rarely hot) as this Central Coast land straddles the border near Southern California known for its warmer beaches.

No Fires on the Beach:

Fires are allowed only in fire rings or camp stoves and are not permitted on the beach. Do not gather firewood in the park. You may purchase firewood from the camp hosts.

There's never a bad time to take a drive through this seemingly isolated and unincorporated portion of coastline. Don't get too excited in thinking you are all alone. Civilization and life surrounds you at Point Mugu where nearby Naval Air Station-NAS Point Mugu as a Naval Air missile test center.
