3 California Bridges to Walk Across, Just for Kicks

I'll never forget the horrified look of terror in the eyes of a fluffy, little white dog as a girl tried to drag her pet by the leash across the swaying Capilano Suspension Bridge, one of Vancouver's top attractions. The scene was unsettling but hasn't affected my love of bridges-and walking across them in California. There are no panicked pups on the Sundial Bridge (shown in photo) in Redding, Calif. Three of my favorite bridges to walk across in California include one cute, little swinging bridge passing over a creek in Arroyo Grande. It provides an easy walk that connects the city parks, an historic school house and downtown shops. The Arroyo Grande Swinging Bridge, a one-of-a-kind attraction in California, is a mere 40 feet above the creek and a mere 171 feet long. Be sure to pull off I-101 when passing through California's central coast near Pismo Beach, to see the charming, historic village of Arroyo Grande and walk on the bridge.

One of the world's most expensive foot bridges is also located in California, and happens to be one of my favorite architectural attractions. The Sundial Bridge in Redding is a gleaming white structure with a unique appearance that looks like a giant art installation. A world famous architect designed this amazing bridge that you can walk across next to McConnell Arboretum and Turtle Bay Exploration Park. When driving along the fast-paced 1-5 in Northern California, be sure to pull off the interstate at Redding and take a walk on this bridge. It's worth the trip.

Finally, no bridge walking tour of California would be complete without walking on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. My long-deceased grandmother used to talk about a time when there was no Golden Gate Bridge in the San Francisco bay. It's hard to imagine that the most photographed bridge in the world hasn't always been a part of San Francisco's history and legacy. It is located on the 1-101.
