Duarte, California Information

Located in Los Angeles County, the City of Duarte prides itself in being business friendly. The largest employer is City of Hope with an estimate 3,500 employees working at this famed institution.

Two medical institutions were started in Duarte in the early part of the 20th century. In 1913, the Jewish Relief Association started a tuberculosis sanitarium on 40 acres of land South of Duarte Road. This later evolved into the world-renowned City of Hope Medical Center, a recognized leader in fighting cancer and other catastrophic diseases. In 1930, a group of Carmelite Sisters established the Santa Teresita Rest Home, known today as Santa Teresita  Medical Center.

The all-volunteer Duarte Historical Museum  at 777 Encanto Parkway is a great place to acquaint yourself with the city's history. It's usually open the first and third Wednesdays of the month 1-3 p.m. and Saturdays 1-4 p.m. Call (626) 357-9419  | ranchodeduarte.org.

When visiting Duarte or passing by the city on the 210 Freeway where it intersect the 605 Freeway, you'll probably notice the scenic San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The city is bounded by these mountains and other L.A. County cities such as  Monrovia, Irwindale and  Azusa. Duarte is not only located at the intersection of two busy freeways but also on historic U.S. Route 66 which today follows Huntington Drive through the middle of the city.

Named after Andres Avelino Duarte, a Californio ranchero who founded the community, the city name has a three syllable pronunciation with the first sounding like the word "do". The next sounds like "are" and the third syllable sounds like tay.

While some travelers opt to stay in the city for business travel, Duarte is a medical tourism destination for many seeking cutting edge cancer treatments.

Locals love Duarte for its amenities, year-round temperate climate, great location near Los Angeles County Arboretum, Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, Huntington Library & Gardens and the city's own pride, its parks & recreation programs and facilities. Don't miss annual events such as Concerts in the Park.
