SACRAMENTO 81st Annual Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony Wednesday, December 7, 2011, 4:45 p.m. 2012 TBA
On November 7, 2012, CAL FIRE Shasta-Trinity Unit assisted with the transport of the State's Christmas tree. The White Fir tree came from the Latour Demonstration State Forest in Shasta County and stands over 60-feet tall. The fir tree was transported south on Interstate 5 to the State Capitol from Redding area. According to the California Department of General Services, who oversees the tree's placement, once decorated, the tree will contain 10,000 lights and 500 ornaments. In keeping with tradition, the Department of Developmental Services will provide the ornaments, handcrafted by children and adults with developmental disabilities who receive services and support from state developmental centers and 21 nonprofit regional centers. Again this year, ultra-low-wattage LED lights will be used, saving 95 percent of the energy that would be consumed by incandescent bulbs. The California State Christmas Tree is now on display on the West side of the State Capitol (10th Street, between N and L Streets) in Sacramento.
Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr.
Note: This event is open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to benefit the California Emergency Foodlink.
