John Barrymore is wonderful in his supporting role. The film has lavish cinematography, lush sets and costumes, and of course the debut of the song Will You Remember with its immortal lyric Sweetheart, sweetheart, sweetheart. A great improviser, Sonny's shows are a veritable grab bag of musical surprises. Whether it's ragtime, swing or the barrelhouse blues, Boogie Woogie is the heart and soul of his style. EL SEGUNDO: February 2 - 3 Theater will be closed on Sunday the 4th CAMILLE 1921 - silent • Rudolph Valentino, Alla Nazimova • With Live Accompaniment on the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ • Valentino was virtually unknown when he made this film, but he was destined to become the biggest star of his time. Nazimova was a huge star of the silent era, and her performance in this film is absolutely riveting to watch. The unique and imaginative art direction and costume design is by Valentino's wife-to-be Natacha Rambova. An Academy Award winner for Best Picture and Best Actor, Casablanca is one of the greatest films ever made. Absolutely not to be missed! EL SEGUNDO: February 23 - 24 - 25 DUCK SOUP 1933 • The Marx Brothers Duck soup was American slang in the 1930s, describing something that's easy to do. Director Leo McCarey reportedly came up with the title for the film, continuing the "animal" titles of the Marx Brothers' previous three films, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business and Horse Feathers. EL SEGUNDO: March 2 - 3 - 4 IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT 1934 • Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert Directed by Frank Capra A charming screwball comedy that was the first film to win Oscars in all the main categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and Screenplay. An urban legend claims that sales of men's undershirts declined noticeably when in one scene Gable undresses for bed, taking off his shirt to reveal that he is bare chested. EL SEGUNDO: March 9 - 10 IT'S A GIFT 1934 • W.C. Fields One of cinema's greatest comedians in one of cinema's funniest films. It's a Gift is often cited as W. C. Fields' best comedy. It is a nonstop funfest. The film was recently listed by the American Film Institute in the top 100 funniest films ever made. It's a Gift will surely remain a genuine masterpiece of cinema and of W. He plays a bookish college student who tries to become an athlete to reconcile with his girlfriend, but it turns out to be harder than he thought. Keaton's own athletic prowess allows him to pull off some impressive gags, and the film leaves you with a sweet ending, Keaton-style. Once a year moviegoers make a pilgrimage to Catalina Island and transport themselves back to the silent film era of the 1920s. The Catalina Island Museum's Silent Film Benefit presents the early cinema the way it was intended to be enjoyed in one of the grandest movie palaces of the day, on a big screen with live accompaniment. "The Phantom of the Opera" 1925, Starring Lon Chaney An American silent horror film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel of the same name. Lon Chaney stars in the title role as the deformed Phantom, who haunts the Paris Opera House. Murder and mayhem fill the opera house as the Phantom attempts to make the woman he loves a star, even though she loves another man. Lon Chaney is also known for his role as Quasimodo in "The Hunchback of Notre Dame." His creative and nontraditional use of make-up earned him the nickname of "The Man of a Thousand Faces." Live accompaniment by a 30-piece symphony orchestra, a soprano vocalist and the Avalon Theatre Page pipe organ. Conducted by Grammy Award-winning Richard Kaufman.

You can hear the Mighty Wurlitzer theatre organ played during the intermissions before and after the 7:30 show. Depending on the day of the week, you will hear a Master of the Mighty Wurlitzer perform.

In 1987, after a blockbuster Fred Astaire Film Festival, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation bought the theatre and restored it to its original splendor. It is now owned and operated by the non-profit Stanford Theatre Foundation, presenting classic Hollywood films.
The renovated Stanford Theatre quickly became America's most popular place to watch classic Hollywood movies.

The theatre's large neon marquee is an easily visible landmark on University Avenue. There are two large public parking structures within two blocks of the theatre. One is on Bryant Street, in the first block north of University Avenue. The other is on High Street, in the first block south of University Avenue. Tickets are available at the box office on the day of the show. Ticket prices are approx. $7, $5 for Seniors (65 and over) and Youth (18 and under).

Due to a recent lawsuit against Berkeley High School regarding handicap access, all public concerts in the Berkeley Community Theatre have been canceled. The School Administration has exempted members of NorCal from this restriction; therefore, the concerts will take place for members of NorCal ONLY. If you wish to attend and are not a member, you may join NorCal TOS on the day of the concert. Membership dues are $20.00 per family. Unfortunately, there will be no First Timer Free or comps.
