USS Hornet Birth of the Original Navy SEAL: The Underwater Demolition Team May 30, 2015, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Highly-decorated WWII veteran, one of the first U.S. Navy SEALs, William Goehner, Jr., describes his harrowing WWII missions, including suicide mission portrayed by actor Richard Widmark in the 1951 film The Frogmen. Santa Clara County resident and former lieutenant commander (LCDR) William Goehner, Jr., who was one of the first Navy SEALs during WWII. Goehner was not only a bold participant in some of the most death-defying SEAL missions during the war, but he was also portrayed by actor Richard Widmark in the 1951 Oscar-nominated film "The Frogmen," which depicted the events surrounding a midnight suicide mission successfully led by Goehner in 1944. The current SEALs trace their history from the elite frogmen of World War II. Exercising great ingenuity and courage, these special UDT maritime units devised and executed with relatively few casualties many of the missions, tactics, techniques and procedures that SEALs still perform today. Training is extremely demanding, both mentally and physically, and produces some of the world's best maritime warriors. Former LCDR William Goehner, Jr. of Morgan Hill, CA, joined the Navy at age 16 in 1942 and volunteered for the elite UDT, the original Navy SEAL Team popularly known as "frogmen." The 1951 Oscar-nominated film "The Frogmen" depicted the events surrounding a midnight "suicide" mission successfully led by Goehner (portrayed by Richard Widmark) in 1944. He led many such missions against the German Navy, and became one of the most decorated and fastest promoted sailors in the Navy. Goehner will take Hornet guests through such adventures as a harrowing and danger-packed mission to mine a German submarine base in the Baltic Sea to a heartwarming encounter with a young German soldier while on a reconnaissance mission on Normandy just before D-Day.
