CORONA DEL MAR - Baroque Music
Festival June 17- 24, 2012
The Baroque Music Festival presents five concerts over eight days in June.
Founded in 1981, this Orange County
music festival strives for historically stylistic interpretations of the great masterpieces of the Baroque period. Thus you will hear music by Baroque composers much as it was heard in their time.
Singers and instrumentalists attempt to
remain true to style, with use of
period instruments that are either
antique or modern reproductions to make
the sound and experience as close to the
original as possible. Mixed in are a few later neo-Baroque
works. Prices are around $15 - 50 for
tickets.
The festival began when Irmeli and Bud Desenberg lamented the dearth of classical music events in Corona del Mar
and Newport Beach. Except for a few
Orange County Philharmonic Society
concerts, residents had to drive to Los Angeles
or San Diego to hear Baroque concerts.
Sherman Library & Gardens hosted the
first concert. Then Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church
consented to use their venue which
included a fine pipe organ.
The inaugural series, 1721 June 1981, opened on Wednesday at Sherman Gardens' Central Patio Room
