Organizers offer $30,000 in total prize money for a new world record pumpkin entered at Half Moon Bay (the current world record is 2,624-pounds set in 2016 at a weigh-off in Germany).

HALF MOON BAY, CALIF. -- Half Moon Bay biggest and best known event of the year is also known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and California. Art & Pumpkin Festival is a celebration of pumpkins, music, community and art.

Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off,  World Heavyweight Championship of Gargantuan Gourds features a special $30,000 bonus mega-prize awarded to any grower that breaks the world record at Half Moon Bay that many consider the Super Bowl of Weigh-Offs. The current world record is 2,625-pounds set in 2016 at a weigh-off in Germany. There's a  coveted title, the $30,000 world record prize and thousands in additional prize money. In a pay-by-the-pound system, the winner takes home a hefty $6 per pound for the champion mega-pumpkin. The grand champion gourd along with the top five overall are on display at the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival.

The event is held one weekend before Halloween, and usually includes a big pumpkin weigh off. In a recent contest a 1,535-pound Atlantic Giant pumpkin beat out sixty heavyweight contenders from Washington, Oregon, Colorado to win the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in Half Moon Bay, the self-proclaimed World Pumpkin Capital. The Citrus Heights, Calif. grower was the first Californian to win the contest in 11 years.
