REDDING: NorCon Wargaming Convention,. Wargamers from all over participate in tournaments for all gaming systems Friday through Sunday.

What is wargaming? Wargames at this convention are tabletop competitions with unique, imaginative painted craft and sci-fi characters, along with miniature human figurines donning futuristic costumes to battle their way in survival mode through a variety of situations and worlds. Here are several of this year's scenarios:

Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop miniature wargame. Players can assemble and paint individual, 1.1 inch scale miniature figures that represent futuristic soldiers, creatures and vehicles of war. These figurines are collected to compose squads in armies that can be pitted against those of other players. Each player brings a roughly equal complement of units to a tabletop battlefield with handmade or purchased terrain. The players then decide upon a scenario, ranging from simple skirmishes to complex battles involving defended objectives and reinforcements. The models are physically moved around the table and the actual distance between models plays a role in the outcome of combat. Play is turn-based, with various outcomes determined by tables and the roll of dice. Battles may last anywhere from a half-hour to a whole weekend, and battles may be strung together to form campaigns.

Apocalypse Second Battle for Black Reach: In 855.M41, Black Reach, and to a lesser extent, its neighboring planets Jede'ogh and Voldermach, were overcome by a surging Ork WAAAGH! primarily composed of the Goff Clan under the control of the Greenskin Warlord Zanzag. The planet of Black Reach, though ostensibly valueless, was of great tactical import to the Ultramarines Chapter's Realm of Ultramar. The planet is surrounded by a series of asteroid belts so dense that should Black Reach and its vast array of orbital debris ever become infested by xenos, it would take centuries to exterminate them all.

Magic: In the Magic game, you play the role of a planeswalker, a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers for glory, knowledge, and conquest. Your deck of cards represents all the weapons in your arsenal. It contains the spells you know and the creatures you can summon to fight for you.
