The Ocean Beach Kite Festival is sponsored by Ocean Beach Kiwanis Club and Ocean Beach Recreation Center. It is one of four community events that local Kiwanis host annually. The other events have included the Ocean Beach Canine Carnival, Ocean Beach Fishing Derby and Ocean Beach Summer Festival.

The Kite Festival event invites the public to come out and build a kite. Kite construction takes place at the Ocean Beach. Prizes are awarded to the best decorated kites. Free kite making materials for children and some assistance in design and construction for successful kite flying are included.

In the past there has been a children's parade at 2 p.m. with participants forming the parade and walk to the beach to fly their kites where there are food vendors, crafts vendors, music, entertainment and kite flying. Lunch, a street fair, a parade, and carnival rides are part of the great festivities that make this one of the top draws of the season in San Diego.

Ocean Beach Kite Festival is the oldest kite festival for children in the United States, presented continuously for 62 years by Ocean Beach Kiwanis, in cooperation with the Ocean Beach Recreation Center and Ocean Beach Elementary School.
