Celebrating it 64th year in 2012, the
Ocean Beach Kite Festival is sponsored
by Ocean Beach Kiwanis Club and
Ocean Beach Recreation Center. It is one
of four community events that local
Kiwanis host annually. The other events
have included the Ocean Beach Canine
Carnival, Ocean Beach Fishing Derby and
Ocean Beach Summer Festival.
The Kite Festival event invites the
public to come out and build a kite.
Kite construction takes place at the
Ocean Beach Recreation Center from 9
a.m. 12:30pm. Prizes are awarded to
the best decorated kites. Free kite
making materials for children and some
assistance in design and construction
for successful kite flying are included.
PARADE - At 2 p.m.
participants form a parade and walk to
the beach to fly their kites where there
are food vendors, crafts vendors, music,
entertainment and kite flying. Lunch, a
street fair, a parade, and carnival
rides are part of the great festivities
that make this one of the top draws of
the season in San Diego.
Ocean Beach Kite Festival is the
oldest kite festival for children in the
United States, presented continuously
for 62 years by Ocean Beach Kiwanis, in
cooperation with the Ocean Beach
Recreation Center and Ocean Beach
Elementary School.
Schedule: 9 AM -12:30 PM Kite making at Ocean
Beach Rec. Center, all materials will be
supplied.
11:00 AM- 1:00 PM Hot dogs and punch for
participants & live band on Ocean Beach
Elementary School
court yard.
9:00 AM- 4:00 PM Craft Fair Booths,
Amusement Rides on Santa Monica Blvd.
1:00 PM Kite Judging on Ocean Beach
Elementary School court yard.
Parade begins at 2:05 PM down Santa
Monica Ave. and ends at the Beach with
freestyle kite flying.
Awards will be given in each division.

& 4th graders, 5th & 6th graders, 7th &
8th
graders, High School & Open Division

Best Theme!
