Chinese Traffic Lights Photos

Photo & story by: Debbie Stock

The most populated Chinese cities often use traffic lights that count down the time till you must stop or can go. There are also stoplights specifically for bikes and motorbike traffic. While bicycles and electric bikes often share the right-hand side of the far right lanes with automobiles, buses and trucks, in larger cities they generally have their own traffic lanes. You may even see bicycle lanes separated by a sidewalk from other motor traffic!

Like the U.S., drivers sit in the left seat of a vehicle and drive in the right-hand lanes. The major difference in China compared to the U.S. is the huge amount commuters riding bikes. While the percentage has dropped significantly to around 20% or less in Beijing, in most places bicycles outnumber cars 10 to 1.
