Chef Paul Gauweiler, a hard-working 80-year-old, who earned his Master Pastry Degree at 24 in Germany, still works 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, creating masterpieces enjoyed around the world from his Cake Box shop in Southern California. He loves California and compares his home to Cote d’Azur in the eastern part of the French Mediterranean, one of the many places he’s travelled to or worked.   • “Many years ago I forgot to put sugar in the strawberry filling of a wedding cake, so I added a scoop of salt, thinking it was sugar.”

  • “There have been many, but recently a customer handed me an envelope containing two $100 bills to see Shen Yun when I said I couldn’t afford it.”

Funniest Moment

  • “A customer who’s a fan of my products came in to buy something. He greeted a German lady entering the shop, eager to steer her to his favorite cookies and cakes. She stopped him and said, ‘You are the Propaganda Minister!’ “
