Most scarecrows are funny and make you laugh. But some of the entrants in the annual California scarecrow contests can creep you out. In the spirit of Halloween, that’s what most people want.
Scarecrow stick figures in fields of corn are mostly symbolic these days, as shiny, metallic strips of film that flit in the wind seem more effective in keeping birds off the grapes, fruits, vegetables and other valuable crops.
However, as the harvest season approaches with pumpkin fests, harvest fests and corn mazes, there’s a fresh crop of scarecrows to bring delight.
