The California Delta, so called because it forms a triangle of water bodies from Sacramento (north) to Stockton (south) to Pittsburg (west), is a labyrinth of 1,000 miles of navigable waterways. Few boaters claim to have traveled every one of those navigable miles but some spend their lives trying. The Delta’s charming towns cast a magical spell over visitors who take scenic drives along the asphalt sloughs, especially this time of year when trees spring forth with colors ranging from white to yellow, purple, and pink. The California Delta Chambers and Visitor’s Bureau (californiadelta.org) suggests a scenic drive, Rio Vista-Ryde Loop, that begins on Highway 12 crossing five drawbridges and riding two ferries before coming full circle. For those who can’t resist, at the edge of the San Joaquin/Sacramento River Delta the Lodi Appellation boasts over 60 wine tasting rooms. You may not have a lifetime to explore the Delta but give yourself a day to explore its natural beauty and you won’t be disappointed!
