Though the founder of the modern-day Renaissance faire, Ron Patterson, has passed on (Nov.2,1930-Jan.15, 2011), his legacy lives at an annual event in Southern California, and festivals throughout California and the U.S.
In the spring of 1963 his inspiration came from his school-teacher wife who hosted a learning event for students in their backyard in Laurel Canyon, Hollywood Hills. The Pattersons’ first public event followed shortly in May 1963 in Agoura Hills. Who could believe around 8,000 people would show up for something based roughly on English history?
The annual event continues to this day as The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire in Irwindale. Californians embrace Renaissance-themed fairs and festivals more than anywhere (there are approx. 20-25 held events annually.) Usually billed as family-friendly, they encourage guests to don costumes and role play. Often companies on-site offer costume rentals. If you’ve never attended a Ren faire, this could be your lucky year to try it out!
