Dublin, California VS Dublin, Ireland

When the Dublin, California St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps out on Dublin Street on March 18, 2017, 9:30 a.m. PST, the folks in Dublin, Ireland where it’s 4:30 p.m. or 7 hours ahead, already had theirs (pictured above.) Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day holiday includes a 4-day festival in Dublin Mar.16-19, 2017.

Like a number of cities named “Dublin” in the U.S., California’s Bay Area city called itself Dublin for Irish settlers Michael Murray and Jeremiah Fallon who came here in 1850. It wasn’t till 1982 that it officially became Dublin, founded on the aspirations of emigrants from the Emerald Isle. Though Dublin, CA has only one-tenth the population of the City of Dublin, Ireland, its biggest celebration is St. Patrick’s Day — just like its namesake. While there are major demographic, economic and geographic differences, Dublin, California shares the aspirations so many cities in the state do as they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day this weekend!
