Eating Testicles is a Ball in Oakdale

It’s time to chew and chomp on those delicious deep fried balls served hot at Oakdale Rotary’s annual fundraising Oakdale Testicle Festival where you’re guaranteed to ‘have a ball’.  Rocky Mountain Oysters as they are often called, are a by-product of calf castration. For those who missed Farm 101 and ask “why?”, here’s the explanation:

Calves are castrated because steers (male calves that have been castrated) have many desirable characteristics compared to bulls (male calves that aren’t castrated). Steers do not grow as large and muscular as do bulls. Steers are safer to have around compared to bulls. Bulls are more likely to fight other cattle and attack people. While bulls are useful for reproduction purposes, the meat from bulls is tougher and not as pleasant for people to eat compared to meat from steers. Before cooking testicles, they are usually scalded, skinned, and soaked in cold water. Tasty!
