Pictured is a bench on Marine Ave. (the main drag)  in Balboa where you may have to share your seat with the dearly departed; a decorator returns to the scene of the crime each year to deck out a bay view home with the macabre; a skull & bones bride left at the altar is still waiting for her groom to return.

Of all the cities we’ve seen, one of the finest for Halloween decor is actually a little town called Balboa Island. Part of Newport Beach, this island takes its holidays seriously, no joke!  On October 31 each year, thousands of children swamp the island with their folks to trick or treat at strangers’ homes. When you were a kid, you probably opted for the best neighborhoods –this would have been on your A-list.

Here are some trick or treat destinations where you can don a costume and have fun on October 31:

  • Albany – Trick or Treat on Solano –  info
  • Arcata – Trick or Treat on the Plaza – info
  • Balboa Island – Trick or Treat on the Island
  • Big Bear Lake – Trick or Treat in the Village – info
  • El Segundo – Trick or Treat on Main Street – info
