Whether you head for the desert and the annual Palm Springs Halloween on Arenas (pictured), or spend your night at the insane West Hollywood Carnaval on Santa Monica Boulevard where half a million crazies in costume are expected, California’s “mean streets” turn wild on October 31, and that is no exaggeration!

Palm Springs Halloween on Arenas

  • $1000 Costume Contest
  • Debby Holiday, one of the most prolific dance artists with mega-hits “DIVE”, “I LIKE YOU”, “BRING IT ON”, “PIECE OF MY LOVE” and “SURRENDER” brings the beat to the street on Arenas Road at this event, $5 donation but no one turned away.

Wild is in the eye of the beholder. To adults without children wild can mean the sight of kids trick or treating for candy in a downtown plaza or shopping mall. Here’s a few places you may want to steer clear of if that’s your definition:

Trick or Treat

  • Arcata | Atascadero | Auburn
  • Bakersfield | Balboa Island | Berkeley | Big Bear Lake | Brea | Buena Park
  • Chico | Claremont | Concord | Coronado
  • Davis | El Segundo | Encinitas
  • Fortuna | Glendale | Grass Valley
  • Huntington Beach | Lakeport | La Verne
  • Monrovia | Monterey | Morgan Hill | Morro Bay
  • Nevada City | Oakland
  • Paso Robles | Palo Alto | Pasadena | Perris | Petaluma | Pinole | Placerville
  • Quincy | Redondo Beach
  • San Bruno | San Jose | San Rafael | Santa Barbara | Santa Cruz | Santa Rosa | Stanford | Seal Beach | Sierra Madre | Suisun City
  • Turlock | Upland | Ventura | Walnut Creek

Maybe “wild” is the sight of a parking lot where cars, candy and kids converge (and not collide). If that’s your avoidance, steer clear of these:

Trunk or Treat

  • Agoura Hills | Artesia
  • Fontana | Irwindale
  • Merced | Modesto | Moorpark
  • Pittsburg | Rosemead
