For nearly a decade SeeCalifornia.com has paid homage to Imperial Beach U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition through the images of one such event before 2012 when the largest sand sculpture competition in the nation was disbanded. A timeline of that historic festival can be seen on Imperial Beach’s current festival  website (sunandseafestival.com) along with a schedule of the Sun and Sea Festival celebration July 13-14, 2018. And the great news is that sand castles are back in a big way with an Exhibition Sandcastle on display Friday, and competitions for master builders or “Kids & Castles” on Saturday.

Sand castles are for everyone! Anybody can build a sand sculpture with just a few simple tools and a little know-how. Children instinctively do it on their trips to the beach, but when you watch master builders in action, it’s magic!

Back when mega-sandcastle events were the rage throughout California, one of the world’s premier master builders declared our beaches had the best sand anywhere — specifically in Seal Beach. At that time Seal Beach hosted an annual sandcastle festival that included sculptures constructed by teams of master builders. Long Beach, likewise, hosted a sandcastle festival for several years featuring master builders and their designs.

Today there remains one mega-festival in San Diego and smaller events throughout the state with long traditions.
