I come from a circus family where clowning around is an occupation. At the Zoppe Italian Family Circus featuring Nino the Clown in Redwood City, the audience is introduced to a friendly, fun, family-oriented clown who works hard to make people laugh. Still, there’s a joker in every crowd, and this week’s Wasco Clown Fiasco is freaking people out. The Kern County Sheriff’s Department is fielding calls about frightening clown sightings after a couple posed in clown outfits in Wasco, then promoted themselves on social media. A teen boy tried to emulate the experience in a copy cat clown persona, but ended up terrorizing local youth and adults who found him creepy. Halloween is intended to be creepy, but not threatening. Unfortunately there’s a fine line between creepy, corny and being unaware of potential consequences of a realistic scare. Here are some Halloween celebrations this Friday, Oct. 17, 2014:
