Conventional wisdom says that nobody wants to go to jail. But in Gridley, Calif. it’s a another story during Red Suspenders Day in May. If you get locked up, you have a chance to pay off your debt –most do so gladly. First you have to be nominated in Unjustice Court and once somebody supplies your name, you’ll be taken into custody by either the Volunteer Police or Volunteer Fire Department, then locked up as an offender at Rotary Park to stand before the Judge. It’s all in good fun, and offers a fantastic community fundraiser which began in 1961, paying homage to those willing to protect and keep us safe.
There are many homespun events to enjoy in California cities and towns… such as…
Monrovia Days, a community festival celebrating the founding of the City of Monrovia, established in 1887 in Los Angeles County, features free concerts, a pie eating contest and old-fashioned fun in Library Park.
Brea Bonanza Days in Downtown Brea features a country/western theme with concerts, line dancing, a beer & wine garden, Kids Zone and more at this ticketed shindig.
San Diego’s Ocean Beach Kite Festival this weekend is a time-honored favorite for parents and kids who can make kites, then fly them under the supervision of volunteers supplied by Ocean Beach Kiwanis. If you’ve never visited “OB” you’re definitely missing out on experiencing the quintessential Southern California beach vibe.
Santa Rosa’s Luther Burbank Rose Parade and Festival held downtown is steeped in history since 1894. While some may think it’s a spin-off of the the famed Rose Parade in Pasadena, the event pays homage to a local inventor credited with many accomplishments in horticulture and botany. Burbank developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career.
