It's almost a perfect picture-fashionable dressed teenagers and young adults wearing designer clothes, $150-300 hair styles, and tattoo art and rings ranging from $150 to $1000. They stand on the street corner looking to see and be seen. The image is nearly perfection-except for the cigarettes in their hands- the killing effect!

California has the 2nd lowest smoking rates in the U.S. just under Utah, due mostly to legislation that has practically banned cigarette smoking in public places. However, cigaretter manufactures who have had to pay California agencies over $9 billion for their misbehavior in targeting teens, have continued to attract the youthful audience into smoking. In 2010 the attorney general of California struck an agreement with Valero to stop selling cigarettes to underage youth. Each day 2,000 children begin smoking in the U.S. One-third of them will die of tobacco-related diseases. Nearly half of underage smokers said they bought their cigarettes at gas station convenience stores.

And Florida-based Smoking Everywhere was sued in 201o by California's attorney general for its claims that smokeless cigarettes were not unhealthy. A cocktail of chemicals, including antifreeze components, were found in this supposedly healthy product targeted to youth in flavors ranging from bubblegum and cotton candy to grape flavor. Yum!

Places you can't smoke in California include most public beaches, restaurants, airports, and public places. Some cities are targeting their public parks as smoke-free zones, and now renters are facing challenges in smoking in their own apartments as legislation could one day outlaw such practices.
