Del Mar, A Place But Foremost a Tradition

When Bing Crosby bought the first ticket to enter the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club racetrack grounds on opening day in 1937, his popular appeal and a song he subsequently sang about the place created an aura that no other California racetrack can quite obtain. But there's a little more to the allure of Del Mar that makes it so unique. It is the only thoroughbred racing track set next to the Pacific Ocean. Add ingredients such as the world famous San Diego County weather, and you have a winning formula that has sustained this locale as THE PLACE TO BE for over 70 years. You can be there now, as well. The racing season goes through September 7, 2011, and table seating starts at an affordable $5. They have special events such as kids days and summer concerts featuring top acts such as Devo on Aug. 20, with a $20 ticket fee for that special concert event. (dmtc.com)

Pictured is a view of the Powerhouse Community Center, the icon of the beaches of Del Mar. The public can rent the facility for events, located next to the municipal Del Mar beach. The view is from the upscale accommodations at L'Auberge Del Mar Resort & Spa. The Powerhouse was built in 1928 and operated with boilers providing heat for pools at a luxury resort on the beach. When the resort folded, the Powerhouse became one of California's first efforts at desalination in 1965, operated by Universal Water Corporation. That venture ended, as well, and the city joyfully celebrated as it purchased the facility, renovating it for public use. (delmar.ca.us)

In 1983 the City of Del Mar purchased the powerhouse and buildings and renovated them, making them available to the public in a resort-like atmosphere. For day-tripping, Del Mar offers a great escape from L.A. and Orange County, but it's nice to stick around as tourists from around the globe prefer to do. Many great beach restaurants line the coast with oceanside dining a popular choice. The weather, location, and beaches make for an experience that's part Baja, part Hawaiian Islands, and uniquely Del Mar!
