Loomis Eggplants Part of October Fruit Festival Season

Eggplant is a much misunderstood fruit, native to India, but growing in California and exported to other states and countries. Though California is not the top American producer of the purple, elongated fruit shaped somewhat like a squash, it does rank around #3 in the U.S. for growing and shipping (Florida is 1st, Georgia 2nd.)

Other California Fruit & Food Festivals in October:

  • Apple Harvest Festival Fortuna
  • Avocado Festival Carpinteria
  • Tomato Festival Los Banos
  • Lemon Festival Goleta
  • Pumpkin Festival Calabasas

Each year in the foothills of the Sierra Mountains in California’s Gold Country city of Loomis, the Eggplant Festival is held in the fall, celebrating the local produce, products and community groups. One of the most popular ways the eggplant is served, breaded and fried, accompanied by dipping sauce, can usually be found at the festival, along with many unique eggplant dishes–even eggplant burgers!

Loomis has rich soil and ideal climate for growing eggplant, mandarin oranges, grapes for wines, vegetables and fruits. The city’s heritage spans the decades and affiliation with the fruit industry–Loomis once was a packing house for mostly orchard fruits, and the historic Blue Goose Fruit Shed is in Loomis is a must see during your visit.

Located a mere 25 minutes from Sacramento, Loomis Eggplant Festival, a 24 year tradition in 2011, is well worth a drive to the country. It provides an opportunity to stock up on all the fresh foods you can take home and consume over a period of time. The event is sponsored by Loomis Chamber of Commerce and admission is free!
