If you were visiting Southern California on Christmas Day, you could have driven around for an hour, looking for a place to get a hot meal. On the other hand, if you knew about Redondo Beach, one of the top, most diverse dining spots in Los Angeles, you would have gone there and headed for the pier. In one place there were over a dozen eateries open for business and hundreds (if not thousands) of people pouring in and out of the fish cafes, Mexican restaurants, fine dining and even Craig's Hot Dog on a Stick.

The food runs the gamut on the Redondo Beach Pier-and the parking was free throughout the entire day on Christmas Day, December 25. The offer may not be available every year so you should check for details.

"We're having an incredible day," said a waiter at the El Torrito, on the Redondo Beach Pier. While restaurant staff worked with less help than normal, those who cooked & served found the pace kept them busy and time went quickly.

The 2nd floor restaurant features stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and the Riviera- diners said they felt they were getting a great value over other restaurants that traditionally raise their rates on Christmas Day.

The majority of restaurants open on Redondo Beach Pier were fresh fish market-style cafes where you choose your fish and it is cooked while you wait. But Sharkeez, El Torrito, Chart House, Buca di Beppo and many other restaurants chains in Southern California remained open, and the people poured in.

Next year when you are all alone, want to take a trip or drive, or maybe you don't feel like cooking on Christmas, be sure to add Redondo Beach to your dining options. We've scoured Southern California for a decade and can report that it the best dining spot we've seen-and the people we interviewed (approx. 25) said the same thing.

Each year more restaurants test being open on Christmas Day, so your options are likely to improve in 2011.
