Sprouts Store Opens

Sprouts just opened in my neighborhood– and an Albertson’s is closing along with 10 more in California. In recent years I’ve visited Albertson’s less and less, opting for places specializing in organic produce, dairy and policies on GMO labeling. Apparently I am not alone. The Albertson’s store was nearly empty last time I looked, but the three Trader Joe’s stores close-by are always packed. As one store (or door) closes, a new one opens. In recent months I’ve seen the grand opening of a Gelson’s, replacing Albertson’s, a Sprouts replacing Ralph’s, and several such transformations. Economist William W. Roberts, director of San Fernando Valley Economic Research Center, says that Albertson’s is facing tough competition and unfortunately, is fuzzy about its target market.
