Why People Go to ScotsFest

LONG BEACH, CALIF. — The 22nd Annual Queen Mary ScotsFestival this past weekend was a huge success. For the non-Scots among us there can be consternation and surprise when first attending one of these events and seeing the crowds. You may not appreciate the odd sounding bagpipe marching bands, men in plaid skirts called kilts, and foods with names such as haggin, potato & cabbage soup or meat pies. It’s kind of new, confusing and it takes some getting used to, but be careful when you ask a Scot what’s it all about. After the initial shock wears off and you repeat the question once more, you get some candid, compassionate responses that help you understand how the Scottish think and what makes them tick. Here are a few comments we received yesterday:

  • Phil McNeff, owner of Kitchenerz — Swords, Armor, Scottish Apparel & More! This is my store’s 16th year at the Queen Mary ScotsFestival. Business was good the first couple years. Then it dropped for several, and now we’re seeing an uptick with increased traffic and shoppers spending money at our booth. It’s been great. This year may set records.
  • Joseph White, VP of Athletics – The festival changes each year but honestly, it’s always a good show. The sports competitions are incredible to watch. Talk about strength and determination!
  • Mary Queen of Scots – I have been coming to this event for 15 years or more, but not in the role of Queen Mary of Scots. I am proud to knight the youth who take the time to persevere and complete the tasks we’ve assigned them to at the ScotsFestival. Children are eager to learn. We teach them a little bit of history in a fun manner.
  • Celtic Caterer and Chef Eric McBride – We had an awesome day with record breaking crowds at all seven of our demos. I give people a chance to see what Celtic Cooking really tastes like. With my extensive travels and research I am able to include fascinating information in my cooking demonstrations and cookbooks. My recent Celtic cook book of Ancient and Traditional Recipes from Wales & the Island of Man has over 60 recipes and includes 14 historical essays and excerpts of 12 ancient poems.
  • Long Beach Police Pipe Band member – We don’t actually work for the police department but we enjoy getting outfitted and performing for the crowds. The audience goes wild!
