Laguna Beach, Calif.-- Sawdust Festival is an event held in the Summer Months operated by a non-profit organization with the goal of promoting and educating local arts and artists. (45th Annual Summer Show). Not to be confused with the other art festival next door, you can see Art-A-Fair when visiting, as well.
The Sawdust Festival named for the unique canyon venue with sawdust shavings filling the grounds of the outdoor space, features fine arts and crafts of over 200 Laguna Beach artists. Visitors pay admission to the grounds, entering through a gate, and arriving on a maze of outdoor kiosks and building structures where featured artists sell their select items, talk with enthusiasts, and the public can shop, dine and watch entertainment such as bands, all in one place. There's even a beer garden providing cold beverages for warm Laguna days.
Sawdust Festival began in 1966 and has been an amazing success ever since, expanding to include special weekend art classes in the spring, and Winter Festival for Christmas shoppers in the month of December.
Among the media represented are some world-class talents showcasing their original works such as paints, hand-blown and fused glass, ceramics, clothing, textiles, sculpture, photography, and items you can buy as gifts or to decorate your own spaces where you live or work.
One of the fun activities going on each day is the artist demos. Watching a glassblower in an outdoor work area visible from every angle allows you to see what goes on to make great art. It is amazing how long it takes and what techniques are applied to create colors. Sometimes an artist will talk to the audience and tell them what his or her work is about.
