Celebrate the annual return of the flying fish in Catalina annual event.
Each year in the Avalon Bay there's something fishy going on at the end of May. This year it's bigger and better than ever as the annual Flying Fish Festival celebrates the return of the flying fish. There's a Kids 1 Mile Flying Fish Fun Run (June 1, 2014), the Flying Fish Boat Rides complete with fish spotlights (May 29-June 1) and the First Annual Cardboard Boat Regatta (May 31) where you must build a cardboard vessel which can travel a short distance in the Avalon Bay. Other highlights include a professional sand sculpture, Taste of the Island event, free ukulele concert and tours of Wrigley Garden.
Other fish events include Lions Fish Fry in Costa Mesa, Convict Lake Spring
Trout Derby, and C.A.S.T. for Kids in the Delta. The Grunion
are running along the
California coast but it's not open season this weekend.
From late May to September every year, Catalina Island welcomes the famed
flying fish. This spectacular fish soars out of the water at heights of up
to 30 feet and glides for distances as long as ¼ mile. The flying fish visit
the Island for only a few months a year and best shows itself at night when
lured with lights. It is only fitting that Catalina celebrates their arrival
by honoring them as special guests with a four day long weekend of
festivities.
