The seagulls of the California coast are interesting to watch. If you visit piers often, you may see regulars--you can tell them by their spots and colors. Some are missing a leg & foot and stand with just one. The birds are hatched primarily off coast on Anacapa Island, called the Galapagos of California. They nest and roost their in the spring and on a protected island with no known foxes, coyotes or other such predatory animals. They fly to the mainland where steady sources of food are readily available from fishing boats, fish in the sea, and human activities (people leaving food in open trash bins or on the ground.) If you don't watch your beach towel and you happen to have snacks such as sandwiches or chips left exposed while you leave to go into the ocean, the seagulls may come and snag them.
