Los Angeles Zoo Spring Fling returns for two weeks of fun with animals of all kinds. Of special interest this time of year is the Easter Bunny, or bunnies in general.

How much do you know about bunnies? Here are a few facts to munch on:

  • Rabbits (or bunnies) are small mammals in the family Leporidae
  • There are approx. 305 breeds of domestic rabbit
  • Male rabbits are called bucks
  • Females rabbits are called does
  • Rabbits are born hairless and blind
  • Rabbits are herbivores feeding on grass, leafy weeds and large amounts of cellulose, which is digested in a hindgut fermentation process
  • Rabbits sleep with their eyes open, sleep approx. 8.4 hours per day, and prefer sleeping during the day
  • Rabbits gestate for 30 days, and usually have litters of between 4 and 12 babies (kits)
  • One successful doe can produce up to 1,000 offspring in a lifetime
  • Germans may have brought an Easter Bunny tradition with them to the U.S. in the 1700s
