California Going Nuts in November

When the rest of the world refers to the State of California we hear a lot of descriptive and not always pleasant words about us. What used to be a paradise and land of enchantment (and still is to many) also gets bashed for its homelessness, poverty, educational system, declining middle class and many other issues. Some want to come here and others want to leave, but whatever they say about us, when they call us “nuts” we smile with pride.

November is Nuts Month in California

  • Starting in November, Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker begins its annual California appearances first in Stockton on November 2, then Redding on November 3, 2018. This year the famed ballet company appears in Bakersfield, Cupertino, Los Angeles, Northridge, Palm Desert, San Diego and Santa Rosa, as well.
  • Fans and families of The Nutcracker ballet understand why they’re called California Nuts. There are hundreds, if not thousands of Nutcracker stage performances beginning in November and running through December.
  • Also the first weekend in November is the annual Newberry Springs Pistachio Festival, celebrating one of California’s three top nut crops.
  • Speaking of nut crops, 2018 looks to be a record breaking year for California nuts. Last year’s frost potentially spelled disaster for nut growers but the gloomy reports were nuts.
  • California nut crops are harvested mid-August through October. As the nuts and numbers pour in, the state remains the top producer (99% or more) of three crops nationally: 1. Almonds; 2. Walnuts 3. Pistachios
  • Are you nuts? If you’re among the hundreds of thousands of Californians  attending a Nutcracker ballet this season, that’s not quite as nutty as being among the 30+ million residents who will chomp on nuts and gift them to others for the holidays!
