It's Friday the 13th, the nightmarish day that promises not to haunt your weekend. If you can make it to tomorrow, the weekend belongs to you, and there's enough going on that you can bob, slurp, oink or hop through California tasting great beers, watching pigs & cows at fairs, seeing the rubber ducks get dumped off the HB pier, a heck of a lot more.

For the 15th year in a row, the Anderson Valley Brewing Company is hosting its mega-beer tasting festival in the redwood forests of Boonville, the city where locals used to "boont", using an insider's language to talk among themselves. The event is held on Saturday, May 14, 2011, and is a hoot.

Other events in California this weekend include three fairs: Salinas Valley Fair May 12-15 held in King City. salinasvalleyfair.com; Porterville Fair May 11-15. portervillefair.com; and San Bernardino County Fair May 14-22, 2011. sbcfair.com.

Viva la Musica! North of the Mexico border in Calexico is the big mariachi showdown. Mariachi Festival Sin Fronteras through May 15, 2011 features Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlan and 2010 Mariachi Idol. Location: Crummet Park, Calexico, CA. (760) 357-1166.

Free Concerts include Laguna Beach and Costa Mesa Rockabilly, while you can pay to enjoy indie and alternative bands in Joshua Tree, or classical music symphonies throughout the state.

Other things: Monrovia, California east of L.A. is having its big Monrovia Days celebration this weekend; Duck-a-thon in Huntington Beach; Planes of Fame Airshow in Chino May 14 -15, 2011 (planesoffame.org); Woodland Hills Heritage Days and Civil War May 14 - 15 (piercefarmcenter.com); and Museums of the Arroyo Day free admssion to five great museums that include the Gamble House in Pasadena on Sunday, May 15.
