The region south of the Monterey Bay on California's Central Coast contains a richly diverse marine ecosystem. Avila Beach Sea Life Center is the ideal place to maintain a facility that educates and inspires. First launched as the Marine Institute, there's a building facility with several aquatic tanks for hands-on learning and watching ideal for youth and adults. Located overlooking the beach and Avila Pier, the location and organization has grown its programs to include use of an ocean vessel for school trips and pre-arranged programs.

Avila Beach Sea Life Center is a facility built through the funding of Office of Spill Prevention and Response, part of a mitigation project that required the town (part of San Luis Obispo) be rebuilt when oil tanks ruptured and the toxic substances leaked into the ground water system that flows into the Pacific Ocean. Avila Beach Community Foundation.

The Avila Beach Community Foundation was created to manage an endowment provided by the UNOCAL Settlement. The annual earnings on this endowment may be made available for the enhancement and betterment of the Avila Beach Community.
