STANFORD - Carducci String Quartet

The Carducci Quartet is among the finest of the current exceptional crop of young British-based string quartets, building a stellar reputation in the United Kingdom for more than a dozen years. Introduced to American audiences in 2007, when the quartet won the highly competitive Concert Artists Guild International Competition, Carducci has since earned praise as a fearless, incisive champion of contemporary music and an energetic interpreter of classic repertoire. The quartet takes its name from the Italian city of Castagnetto-Carducci, which embraced the group early in its career at its chamber music festival. Sierra, the first woman to win the Takemitsu Prize in 2001, has been recognized by the American Academy of Arts and Letters for her music. Carducci performs Beethoven's String Quartet No.6, the last of his set of early (Opus 18) quartets, which pays tribute to the high classicism of Mozart and Haydn while also breaking with convention in the frenzied scherzo movement and the haunting chromatic finale. The program concludes with Dvořák's popular American quartet No. 12, composed on a retreat in the Midwest in the same period as his New World Symphony, and inspired by African American spirituals, bird songs and American railways.
