It’s a busy week ahead and there are many surprises around the bend. Several of the standout parades celebrate local icons.
California City Tortoise Days Parade on April 28, 2018 features state reptile, the Desert Tortoise, and celebrates nearby attraction, Desert Tortoise Natural Area. All kidding aside, the protected area with its own native population of wild tortoises is not a sanctuary for captive tortoises or found wild tortoises. If you even think of bringing such reptiles into the preserve — don’t! It’s against the law, plus the poor tortoises can die.
Petalama Butter & Eggs Days Parade April 28 pays homage to “The Egg Capital of the World,” which the city once was. Many are old enough to remember driving into town and catching the can’t-miss whiff of chicken coop. The industry nearly collapsed at one point, and although Sonoma County proudly declares itself the birthplace of California’s wine industry, Petaluma chicken ranches have returned in an artisanal, pasture-raised way.
Eureka’s Rhododendron Parade April 28 is all about Rhodie spring blooms. If you haven’t visited California’s Redwood Coast there’s a couple things you should know:
1. It gets rain.
2. Amazing flowers called rhododendrons thrive in the mild climate.
The parade includes creative floats decorated with flowers, crazy marching band performances, and Dolbeer Steam Donkey Days in Fort Humboldt State Historic Park following the parade.
Clovis 104th Rodeo Parade on April 28 winds through the streets of Old Town Clovis with 150 entries to the cheers of more than 25,000 parade fans. Expect plenty of equestrian units, cowboys, cowgirls, and service clubs wearing funny hats and riding tiny, motorized vehicles.
