California Halloween Trains


California's train museums and attractions feature year-round entertainment. Most offer Halloween themed train rides that include a variety of events ranging from the ever popular kids' Thomas and Percy Halloween Party to Pumpkinliner train rides that head to pumpkin patches for some picking and grinning. There are usually more than 10 trains throughout the state that celebrate Halloween.

Halloween Limited takes a ride at 6 p.m. down to the loop for an outdoor spooky storytime, returning to the station around 8 p.m. It's a fun train ride aboard the Sugar Pine Railroad in the beautiful Sierra forests. The event begins with dinner at 5 p.m., serving  a hamburger, hot dog, or vegetarian and a hot dog and chips for the kids. The Logger Steam Train narrated excursion recalls the days of the Madera Sugar Pine Lumber Company's logging operations. Discover the trees of the Sierra National Forest and Shay locomotive.

Start your spooky day off right with a train ride in the mountains of San Diego County as fall descends upon Campo.  The Pumpkin Express winds through some of the most scenic parts of the historic San Diego. After the train returns to the museum grounds, passengers head for the Display Building to enjoy the Pumpkin Express Halloween Celebration. Walk through Halloween scenes, a pumpkin patch, and meet a creepy cast of ghosts and ghouls. Kids and their parents select a prime specimen from the outdoor pumpkin patch to decorate. Pumpkins are included in the purchase of every Toddler and Child ticket on the Pumpkin Express. Additional pumpkins may be purchased for $5 each. Passengers of all ages are encouraged to arrive in costume.

The historic train decorated by a "skeleton crew" invites you aboard for a Halloween celebration/excursion. Dress up according to these fun weekly themes: Critters & Creatures (Oct. 9-10), Superheroes & Villains (Oct. 16-17), Pirates & Princesses (Oct. 23-24) and Witches & Wizards (Oct. 30-31)if you like, and get into the spirit. Guests are encouraged to get in the spirit at one of only two authentic and still-operating short line steam-era railroad roundhouse complexes in the entire nation! The train ride is a 6-mile, 45-minute roundtrip train ride will take you past the water tower from Petticoat Junction and transport you from the backyards of Jamestown to the rugged hillsides of California's Mother Lode country. After your ride, explore the historic grounds, have a picnic, and spend the day in the beauty of California's Gold Country. Located in the heart of California's Gold Country, Railtown 1897 SHP combines railroad heritage, local history and the lure of Hollywood.

California State Railroad Museum Spookomotive Train Rides

Family entertainment:  The diesel-powered train is decorated for the season with cornstalks, scarecrows, skeletons, bats and spiders. Each operating weekend the Spookomotive features a special theme, and includes  on board entertainment and a  Halloween treat.

Western Railway Museum Pumpkin Patch Festival

At the Pumpkin Patch, you can purchase your pumpkins, as well as snacks, drinks and other homemade specialties. There are plenty of activities for the whole family at the pumpkin patch! All proceeds benefit the Western Railway Museum. Annual Pumpkin Patch Festival is located at a railway museum with train rides available.

River Fox Train Pumpkin Train Weekends

Stop at a pumpkin patch and choose the perfect pumpkin to take home. Then re-board the train and make your way back. This 2 hour experience is fun for kids of all ages. Each ticket includes a train ride, time at the private park, trick-or-treating, fun activities, and a pumpkin for every ticket holder! The kids will receive a trick-or-treat bag to decorate while on the train. All train ride seating is open.

Ride the train to get to the Pumpkin Patch where you can pick & purchase pumpkins.  The museum opens at 10 a.m. Trains  depart hourly 1-5 p.m. for the Pumpkin Patch. On Saturday nights, Super Spooky Night Trains depart hourly 7-9 p.m.  Haunted Railcar plus an all-ages Haunted Car for the kids, food and craft vendors, gunfighter performance and more.  $10 per carload, or $5 with the donation of 3 non-perishable canned goods for the EPCAN food bank.
