There was a time when just a few theme parks in California hosted Halloween events. While Disneyland was one of the last holdouts, Halloween has gone mainstream. Park management may suffer an identity crisis determining who to serve--is it kids with parents--or teens and adults. Some parks successfully cater to both. Here's the 21' crop!

ANAHEIM: Disneyland Resort's Halloween Time is included with regular admission to Disneyland theme parks. Several attractions offer new Halloween themes, Disney characters dress in festive attire and there are light projections, music & shows just for Halloween Time.

GILROY: Gilroy Gardens special Halloween event includes not-too-scary evening fun for kids and their folks with stage presentations from a cast of characters Vinnie the Vampire, Cranium the Mad Scientist and Wendella the Witch.

BUENA PARK: Knott's Berry Farm's 'Knott's Scary Farm' sets the standard in Halloween haunts, with people from around the world coming to check it out. This year CarnEvil's creepy, twisted clowns overrun the boardwalk and freak people out. By day, families enjoy Camp Snoopy Halloween entertainment.

CARLSBAD: Family-oriented, kid-friendly Legoland California Brick or Treat includes costume contest parades with prizes, trick or treat stations and a scare zone with not-too-terrifying actors.

SANTA CLARA: California's Great America by day is a family-friendly theme park featuring Pumpkin Fest. At night the atmosphere grows thick with shady characters who prey on the fears of kids who never grew up in 5 mazes that include "Tooth Fairy."
