The Cheesecake Factory, California-based

The Cheesecake Factory arrived to California via Detroit, where Evelyn Overton was known to make some of the best cheesecake in existence. In the early 1950's she began making cakes in the basement of her home where she raised a couple of kids, was happily married to Oscar, and found that people craved her delicious cheesecakes.

The Cheesecake Factory offers upscale casual dining  with approx. 200 menu items including appetizers, pizza, seafood, steaks, chicken, burgers, pasta, specialty items, salads, sandwiches, omelets and desserts, including approximately 40 varieties of cheesecake and other baked desserts.

Grand Lux Cafe and RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen are also upscale casual dining concepts offering approximately 200 and 80 menu items, respectively.

The Cheesecake Factory Incorporated created the upscale casual dining segment in 1978 with the introduction of its namesake concept. The company operates 163 full-service, casual dining restaurants throughout the U.S., including 149 restaurants under The Cheesecake Factory(R) mark; 13 restaurants under the Grand Lux Cafe(R) mark; and one restaurant under the RockSugar Pan Asian Kitchen(R) mark in Los Angeles. The Company also operates two bakery production facilities in Calabasas Hills, CA and Rocky Mount, NC that produce over 70 varieties of quality cheesecakes and other baked products.

History:  The founders of The Cheesecake Factory, a couple named Evelyn and Oscar Overton, moved to Los Angeles at the urging of son, David, who was living in the Bay Area. They launched a bakery and began selling their original cheesecakes in 1972. They called the bakery The Cheesecake FactoryŽ. The original cheesecake led to an original restaurant, and in 1978 The Cheesecake Factory restaurant opened in Beverly Hills, California.  A second restaurant was launched in Marina del Rey in 1983. In 1988 the third opens in Redondo Beach, then a fourth called Lux in Las Vegas. The 5th was launched in Washington, D.C. in 1991. By 1993 the company went public, and was now a chain restaurant with eight units. By 1995 there were 14 restaurants throughout the U.S., and Cheesecake Factory opened its current corporate headquarter in Calabasas. It includes offices and a bakery on location at the 3.3 acre property.

By 1997 there are 23 locations and Host Marriott became a licensee. By 2005, the Cheesecake Factory opened its 100th restaurant and had whopping success with its Grand Lux brand seen in Las Vegas and other cities.

The Cheesecake Factory has grown to 30 some locations in California serving all-natural chicken with no added hormones, premium beef that is Certified Angus, American Style Kobe or U.S.D.A. Choice, fresh fish that is either Longline or Hook & Line caught whenever possible, cooking oils that contain zero grams of trans fat per serving, and produce often sourced direct from premium growers.
